How these 1,111 areas were selected
The directory uses the 1,111 largest population-backed entries in the reference area datasets, ordered by recorded population. It includes 906 England areas, 113 Scottish localities, 62 Welsh areas and 30 Northern Ireland settlements.
The underlying population years differ: England and Wales use Census 2021, Scotland uses Census 2022, and the retained Northern Ireland settlement extract uses Census 2011. This is a ranking of those source records, not a uniform 2026 UK population estimate. London is included once as a regional entry; extra wards and unranked neighbourhoods are excluded.
Places sharing a name use one clean service-and-place page. Their separate locations are listed below its main heading, and your postcode identifies the right address. Source settlement boundaries may differ from council and postal boundaries.
